abstract 1292715 13 - Polycarbonalkyl - 18 - norpregnenes AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORP 4 Feb 1970 [5 Feb 1969] 5368/70 Heading C2U Steroids of the formula (wherein R is C 2-6 alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are each H or are each C 2-6 alkanoyl or R<SP>1</SP> is C 2-6 alkanoyl and R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are each H, and #<SP>1</SP> is optional) which may be further substituted in one or more of positions 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 16, including their mixtures with their l-enantiomorphs, which are novel except when R is npropyl and #<SP>1</SP> is absent, are prepared by reacting steroids of the formula (where X is I or Br) with a lower alkanoylating agent to give the required #<SP>4</SP>-21-alkanoyloxy- 11#,17α-diols, and, when required, carrying out one or more of the steps of hydrolysis, alkanoylation and #<SP>1</SP>-dehydrogenation. The alkanoylation is preferably effected with an alkali metal alkanoate, and the #<SP>1</SP>-dehydrogenation may be effected (a) microbiologically; (b) with SeO 2 ; (c) using dichlorodicyano benzoquinone; or (d) by forming a glyoxalate residue at C-2, brominating at C-2, and then eliminating bromine with simultaneous cleavage of the glyoxalate residue. Starting materials of the second general formula above are prepared (1) when X is to be I, by reacting the corresponding 21-unsubstituted steroids with an iodinating agent; or (2) when X is to be Br, by the reaction sequence The preparation of the starting materials for this process is described in Specification 1,292,716. The steroids of the Formula (I) exhibit glucocorticoid activity and are antiinflammatories. They may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.
