titleOfInvention Process for drawing polyester yarns
abstract 1292381 Polyethylene terephthalate filaments TEIJIN Ltd 3 Feb 1970 [3 Feb 1969] 5172/70 Heading B5B A process for drawing undrawn filaments, yarns and tows of a polyester containing at least 85 mol. per cent of ethylene terephthalate units between a plurality of heated feed rolls 2a-2e and 3, positively driven at substantially the same peripheral speed and at least one draw roll 4a-4d positively driven at a peripheral speed higher than that of the feed rolls is characterized in that at least the last feed roll 3 has a small diameter of 15 to 50 mm., and the arc of contact of the filaments with this roll extend over at least 180 degrees, so that the drawing point of the filaments is localized within its are of contact with said roll. 0À05-0À6% by weight of an oil may be applied as a finishing agent to the filaments before they are drawn, suitably by means of an oiling roller (5) (Fig. 2, not shown). The surface temperature of the small diameter feed roll may be maintained at 60-110‹ C. In a modification the drawing of the filaments is effected in two or more stages, the method of the invention being preferably used in the first stage, the draw ratio in the first stage being 2À5 to 5À5 and the filaments being then further drawn at a stretch ratio of at least 1À1, for example by passing them from the first stage draw rolls 4a-4d, through heater 6 to second stage draw rolls 7a-7j driven at a peripheral speed higher than that of the first stage draw rolls. The filaments may then be passed through heater 8 to third stage draw rolls 9a-9e. The polyester may be polyethylene terephthalate. The polyester may have an intrinsic viscosity as measured in orthochlorophenol at 35‹ C. of at least 0À75.
