abstract 1291159 Vinyl chloride-silane copolymers DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 22 July 1970 [23 July 1969] 35612/70 Heading C3P A cross-linkable copolymer contains units of vinyl chloride and units of X-SiR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>OR<SP>3</SP> in which X is alkenyl, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy or cycloalkyloxy and R<SP>3</SP> is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl. (The copolymers of Specification 1,218,408 are disclaimed.) The polymer products are shaped and then crosslinked by contact with hydrochloric and/or nitric acid at 0-150‹ C. Polymerization may be effected in suspension, emulsion or bulk and may be performed at temperatures below 0‹ C. to obtain stereospecific, crystalline copolymers. Other monomers may be present. The products may be compounded with tin stabilizer, glass fibres, dioctyl phthalate, chlorinated atactic P.V.C., chlorinated polyethylene, syndiotactic P.V.C. or atactic P.V.C. Examples describe copolymers containing vinyl tri-nonoxy silane, vinyl tri-t-butoxy silane, vinyl or allyl trialkoxy silane containing n-C 5 , n-C 6 , n-C 8 , iso-C 8 or n-C 16 alkoxy groups, and vinyl trinonoxy silane and vinyl propionate. The products are formed into sheets, films or filaments and cross-linked with HCl or HNO 3 for periods of 2-180 minutes.
