abstract 1290908 Polymerizing olefins ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 8 Dec 1969 [23 Dec 1968] 59739/69 Heading C3P Cationically polymerizable olefin monomers are polymerized using as polymerization initiator a catalyst system comprising (a) an aluminium compound AlR 2 X where X is H or halogen and R is C 1-12 alkyl, phenyl, C 7-14 aralkyl or C 7-14 alkylaryl, and (b) a metal halide Lewis acid cocatalyst, the mole ratio of (a) to (b) being greater than 2 and the polymerization being carried out with at least 1 weight per cent based on the monomers of a polar solvent included in the reaction mixture. The monomers may comprise at least one C 4-8 isoolefin, e.g. isobutylene, 3- methylbutene - 1, 4 - methylpentene - 1 and 1 - ethyl - 1 - methyl ethylene; and at least one C 4-14 conjugated diolefin, e.g. isoprene, butadiene, piperylene, cyclopentadiene, 2,3- dimethyl - 1,3 - butadiene and cyclohexadiene. The aluminium compound may be diethyl aluminium chloride, bromide, iodide or hydride; dimethyl aluminium chloride or bromide; diisobutyl aluminium chloride or hydride; diphenyl aluminium chloride; or dicyclohexyl aluminium chloride. The Lewis acid may be tin, titanium or zirconium tetrachloride; molybdenum or antimony pentachloride; iron or aluminium trichloride; aluminium tribromide; or boron trifluoride. The polar solvent may be a halohydrocarbon or carbon disulphide, and other solvents which may be present are alkanes and cycloalkanes. Examples describe the copolymerization of isoprene and isobutylene in the presence of methyl chloride, diethyl aluminium chloride and (1, 3 and 5) tin tetrachloride, (7, 8, 15 and 16) titanium tetrachloride, (9) molybdenum pentachloride, (10 and 11) boron trifluoride, (12) aluminium trichloride; and (13 and 14) titanium tetrachloride or tin tetrachloride and the polymerization of isobutylene in the presence of methyl chloride, diethyl aluminium chloride and (17) titanium tetrachloride.
