abstract 1290055 Polymerizing conjugated diolefins JAPAN SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO Ltd 27 May 1970 [31 May 1969] 25557/70 Heading C3P A process for producing homo- or co-polymers of conjugated dienes comprises polymerizing a conjugated diene alone or with a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a lithium-based initiator in a hydrocarbon solvent, the quantity of initiator required for polymerization being divided into portions A and B in a molar ratio A : B of 1 : 3 to 15, the portion A being added at the outset in order to initiate polymerization and the portion B being added when the conversion reaches 20-60% by weight, the B portion being added without deactivating the active species initiated by the A portion. The examples relate to the polymerization of butadiene, isoprene and butadiene/styrene using n-butyl-lithium. Potassium dodecylbenzene sulphate may be present as a randomizing agent.
