abstract | 1289757 Acetylene BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 20 Feb 1970 [21 Feb 1969] 8185/70 Heading C5E Acetylene is produced and purified by the following series of steps:- (a) conventional thermal cracking of normally liquid hydrocarbons, e.g. by submerged-flame cracking of crude oil or heavy fuel oil; (b) conventional washing to remove CO 2 , e.g. using an aqueous solution of potassium α- methylaminopropionate or diethanolamine, followed by selective solvent extraction from which is recovered a crude acetylene containing hydrocarbons having more than 2 carbon atoms and possibly water; (c) chilling the said crude acetylene to - 10 to +30 C. to substantially condense C 5 and higher hydrocarbons; (d) treating the remaining partly purified crude acetylene by countercurrent washing with toluene at - 20 to - 40 C. until virtually all hydrocarbons other than acetylene have been removed from the crude acetylene; (e) heating the laden toluene to 0-40 C. to recover therefrom gaseous acetylene which is recycled to the crude acetylene; and (f) fractionating the acetylene-free toluene to recover pure toluene as bottoms and extracted hydrocarbons overhead. The selective solvent in step (b) may be dimethylformamide, butyrolactone, tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether or N-methylpyrrolidone. If the crude acetylene from step (b) contains water, methanol may be added thereto and a detailed step (c) brought into operation. |
