abstract 1288068 Acrylic emulsion M N MAROSI 10 Sept 1969 44602/69 Heading C3P A material for use in coating aluminium is an aqueous emulsion comprising, based on the weight of the emulsion, a copolymer of 35 to 50% by weight of an alkyl acrylonitrile, and 1 to 10% by weight of an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate; 3 to 15% by weight of the copolymer of a coalescing aid; 0À1 to 0À4% by weight of the copolymer of an anionic wetting agent and 0À01 to 0À3% by weight of the copolymer of catalytic iron oxide; the emulsion being maintained at a temperature between 80‹ and 200‹ F. and a pH of 8À5 to 10À5. The coalescing agent is e.g. a phenyl ether or ethylene glycol ether, the wetting agent may be a sulphonated alkyl ester, the iron oxide is e.g. powdered or shaved ferric oxide. The pH may be adjusted by addition of ammonium hydroxide or an aliphatic amine. An emulsion containing methacrylonitrile-methyl acrylate copolymer, ethylene glycol butyl ether, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, diethylamine and iron oxide is described.
