abstract 1287919 Coatings ARTHUR D LITTLE Inc 29 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968] 47846/69 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and D2] Bubble coating compositions comprise an oil-in-water emulsion having (a) a continuous aqueous phase having dissolved or dispersed therein a binder formed from a substantially non-elastomeric film-forming resinous component and a matrix structure-forming resinous component which is relatively hard when compared with said film-forming component, the the proportions of the binder components being such as to provide a uniformly cavernulous substantially continuous structure having a reflectance of at least 40%; and (b) a discontinuous phase comprising globules of a volatile water-immiscible organic liquid having a boiling point above that of water, substantially all of said globules falling within the size range of 1/10 to 1 micron. The compositions may also include a dispersing agent, e.g. oleic acid or ammonium, sodium or potassium oleate or stearate. In one modification, the two components of the binder in (a) may be replaced by a substantially non-elastomeric copolymer of at least two different monomers, one of which contributes to the formation of a matrix structure and another to the formation of a film. In another modification, the filmforming component of the binder can be replaced by a coalescing agent, e.g. N-methylpyrrolidone, diacetone alcohol or propylene carbonate. The compositions may also include particulate material such as chalk, clay, titania, silica, hydrated calcium silicate, metallic powder, carbon black and coloured pigments. Suitable organic liquids in (b) include aliphatic hydrocarbons, petroleum fractions, exylene, kerosene, mineral spirits, high flash naphthas, aliphatic ketones and aliphatic esters. Exemplified binder components are vinyl chloride copolymers, e.g. vinyl chloride-acrylate copolymers, acrylic polymers, casein, styrene-maleic anhydride resins, styrene-acrylate copolymers, polystyrene and styrene-butadiene copolymers. A partial amide of a vinyl methyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer may be present as a thickening agent. The compositions can be applied to substrates such as tissue paper, publication paper raw stock, paperboard, cardboard, wood, plaster, plastics and metal, e.g. with an applicator blade, wire-wound rod, brush or trailing blade coater.
