abstract | 1287917 Preparing nascent polyolefin fibres CROWN ZELLERBACH CORP 25 Sept 1969 [22 Oct 1968] 47373/69 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized by a process which comprises introducing the monomer into a reaction medium which is a solvent for the desired polymer and polymerizing the monomer in the presence of a co-ordination catalyst while maintaining the reaction mixture at a temperature below the melt dissolution temperature of the polymer in the reaction medium and while agitating the reaction medium at a shear stress so high as to produce nascent polyolefin in the form of fibres having diameters of the same order of magnitude as cellulosic papermaking fibres. The monomer may be ethylene, propylene, butene, pentene, 4-methylpentene- 1, vinylcyclohexane, butadiene or isoprene. The reaction medium may be hexane, heptane, isooctane, tetralin, decalin, cyclohexane, toluene, xylene, mineral oils or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Preferred catalysts comprise titanium trichloride, titanium tetrachloride, vanadium tetrachloride or vanadium oxytrichloride and diethyl aluminium chloride or triethyl aluminium. The products comprise fibrils of diameter at least one micron aggregated in chain like bundles, and may be used to prepare non- woven webs by water- or air-laying processes. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated and examples describe the preparation of nascent polyolefin fibres by polymerizing (1-23) ethylene and (24) propylene. |
