abstract 1287017 Flame retarded vinyl aromatic polymer compositions MONSANTO CO 11 Sept 1970 [12 Sept 1969] 43466/70 Headings C3P and C3G [Also in Division D1] Flame retarded polymer compositions comprise a poly(vinyl aromatic) resin mixed with a flame-retarding composition which comprises (a) either a bromine-substituted alkane of 2-4 carbon atoms and containing at least 4 bromine atoms, or a bromine-substituted phenol having 2-5 bromide atoms in the aromatic nucleus, (b) a tris(bromoalkyl) phosphate wherein the bromoalkyl groups have 2-5 carbon atoms and at least 2 bromine atoms, or a bromine-substituted phenol having 2-5 bromine atoms and (c) one or more lead salts. The resin composition preferably contains 1À5 to 2À0% by weight of the flame retarding composition. Vinyl aromatic polymers exemplified are polystyrene, and rubber-modified polystyrene, although'others such as A. B. S resin may be used The preferred constituents of the flame retarding composition are pentabromophenol, tris (2,3- dibromopropyl) phosphate, and a mixture oftriboric lead sulphate and dibasic lead stearate. Other lead salts specified are lead carbonate, lead silicate and lead phthalate. Other components (a) specified are acetylene tetrabromide (1,1,2,2- tetrabromoethane), 1,2,2,3-tetrabromopropane, 1,1,2,3,4-pentabromobutane or 1,1,2,2,4,4-hexabromobutane, 2,4-dibromophenol and 2,4,6-tribromophenol, and other components (b) specified are those in which the bromo alkyl groups are 1,2-dibromoethyl, 2,3,4-tribromobutyl and 2,2,3,4-tetrabromopentyl.
