titleOfInvention Subbing layers in film recording materials
abstract 1286457 Coating AGFA-GEVAERT 24 Oct 1969 [9 Dec 1968] 58350/68 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions H1 and G2] In a process for the preparation of a recording material comprising a polyester support, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, a layer of a copolymer comprising at least one of the chlorine - containing monomers vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride on the polyester support and a photosensitive hydrophilic layer on the copolymer layer, the adhesion of the hydrophilic layer to the copolymer layer is improved by exposing the surface of the copolymer layer to a high voltage electric corona discharge before the application thereto of the hydrophilic layer. The copolymer may comprise 45-99.5% by weight of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride, 0.5-10% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated hydrophilic monomer, e.g. acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid or N-vinylpyrrolidone, and up to 54.5% by weight of at least one other copolymerisable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. acrylamides, methacrylamides, acrylicacid esters, methacrylic acid esters, maleic acid esters, N-alkylmaleimides or butadiene. A polyester film coated with the copolymer may be passed between an earthed roller and a corona electrode, the copolymer layer facing the corona electrode, and an AC high voltage applied to the corona electrode to produce a high frequency corona discharge, a frequency range of 10-100Kc and current intensities of 0.5Î10<SP>-5</SP>-1.5Î10<SP>15</SP> A/cm being preferred. The copolymer may be applied as a solution or aqueous dispersion which may contain a wetting or dispersing agent by immersion, spray, brush, roller, doctor blade, air brush or wiping techniques to a thickness of 0.3-3ju. The film may be coated on at least one side and stretched in one or both directions prior to and after application of the copolymer. The hydrophilic layer which may be transferred by stripping from a temporary support may also contain a semi-conductive substance, electro conductive agent, matting agent or opaque white pigment in a binding agent, pigment in a photo - hardenable or photosolubilizable binder, light sensitive silver halide, diazonium salt or diazosulphonate, dissolved dye, colour coupler or development nuclei. In the examples polyester films coated with the copolymer and subjected to a corona discharge are coated with an aqueous composition comprising zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, sodium hexametaphosphate, gelatin, formaldehyde and ethylene chlorohydrin, dried, exposed image - wise through a transparent original, dipped in an aqueous solution of silver nitrate, an aqueous solution of p-monomethylaminophenol sulphate and an acid solution containing sodium thiosulphate pentahydrate and potassium metabisulphate, rinsed and dried.
