Formic acids and/or its salts, esters or soluble compounds are used and may be part of the carbon source. Alkanol compounds may be polyhydric, such as pentaerythritol and other conventional additives may be present. Examples describe the preparation of tris- (hydroxymethyl) acetic acid.
