abstract 1283397 Vinyl lactam copolymers GAF CORP 17 Sept 1969 [23 Sept 1968] 45837/69 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C2 and C5] Film-forming copolymers of (a) a N-vinyl lactam or alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxy-alkyl substituted derivative thereof and (b) a half ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and a saturated aliphatic, aromatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic alcohol in a ratio of 1 : 1 to 99 : 1 may be prepared by copolymerization in a solvent, e.g. ethanol or isopropanol, in the presence of a peroxide or azo catalyst, e.g. hydrogen, benzoyl, dit-butyl and dilauroyl peroxides, and azobisisobutyronitrile. The products may be used in hair sprays, as corrosion resistant coatings and as additives for lubricating oils and gasoline. Many suitable monomers are listed and examples describe the copolymerization of N-vinyl-2- pyrrolidone with (I and II) monobutyl maleate, (III and IV) mono-2-ethylhexyl maleate, (V) monoamyl maleate and (VI) monostearyl maleate and mono-oxo-octyl citraconate; and (VI) of N-vinyl-3-t-butyl-2-pyrrolidone and mono-t-butyl itaconate, N-vinyl-3-methoxy-2- pyrrolidone and mono-n-hexyl fumarate and N-vinyl-5-ethyl-2-pyrrolidone and mono-ethyl mesaconate.
