titleOfInvention New alkanoic acid compounds and methods for their production
abstract 1283126 9 - Phenylcarbazole - 4 - acetic acids PARKE DAVIS & CO 9 Nov 1970 [10 Nov 1969] 53250/70 Heading C2C Novel 9 - phenyl - carbazole - 4 - acetic acids of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine atom, R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and A is a -CH = CH-CH = CH- or -(CH 2 ) 4 - group, and carboxylate salts thereof are prepared by reaction of a lower alkyl 9-phenylcarbazole-4-acetate of the general formula with a hydrolytic agent, followed optionally by salification of the product. Lower alkyl 9-phenylcarbazole-4-acetates of the second general formula above are prepared by reaction of 3,4,6,7,8,9-hexahydrodibenzofuran- 1(2H)-one with an o-R<SP>1</SP>-aniline, reaction of the resulting 1,2,5,6,7,8 - hexahydro - 9 - phenylcarbazol-4(3H)-one of the general formula with zinc and a lower alkyl bromoacetate of the general formula BrCHR<SP>2</SP>COO-lower alkyl under anhydrous conditions, followed by hydrolysis, and treatment of the resulting lower alkyl 9 - phenyl - 1,2,5,6,7,8 - hexahydro - carbazole-4- acetate or -#<SP>4(3H),α</SP>-acetate of the general formula respectively, with one or three molar equivalents of sulphur.
