abstract | 1282120 Graft polymerization TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 17 Dec 1969 [28 Dec 1968] 61615/69 Headings C3G and C3P A thermoplastic resin is prepared by initially bulk polymerizing from 70 to 99À7% by weight of the total weight of the resin of a radical copolymerizable vinyl or vinylidene monomer which is a vinyl aromatic compound, or methacrylic acid alkyl ester having 1-3 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical, a mixture of one or more of these materials with each other or a mixture of one or more of these materials with acrylonitrile in the presence of from 30 to 0À3% by weight of the total of a rubber ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer which contains from 70 to 95% by weight of ethylene units having groups of the formula CH 2 =C(CH 3 )COO- in side chains to activate the side chains for graft polymerization with the vinyl or vinylidene monomer and has a fluid starting temperature of at least 70‹ C., while stirring with sufficient shear stress to act on the rubbery ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer until phase immersion occurs and finally subjecting the inverted prepolymerization product to bulk polymerization or suspension polymerization substantially in the absence of shear stress on the rubbery copolymer. The fluid starting temperature is the temperature at which phase separation takes place to an extent sufficient to give a continuous, uniformly fluid layer comprising the phase of the monomer mixture solution of the rubber component. In the examples a styrene-methyl methacrylate solution of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer having CH 2 =C(CH 3 )COO- side chains is prepared by ester interchange. The solution or the polymer alone is bulk polymerized in the presence of styrene and acrylonitrile, tertiary dodeoyl mercaptan and azoisobutyronitrile and then suspension polymerized in the presence of an aqueous solution containing methyl methacrylate-acrylamide copolymer, caustic soda, sodium hydrogen phosphate and hydrochloric acid, or bulk polymerized, both in the presence of azobis-isobutyronitrile. |
