titleOfInvention | Esters of a brominated bis-phenol and their use in inhibition of flammability of polyesters |
abstract | 1281937 Polyester compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Oct 1970 [11 Nov 1969] 55097/69 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] Polyester mixtures of reduced flammability are obtained by forming an intimate mixture in the molten state of a polyester with sufficient of a bromo compound and with sufficient of an antimony compound to give a mixture containing the equivalent of from 0À5 to 10% of bromine by wt. and from 0À1 to 5À0% of Sb by wt., said bromo compound being of the formula wherein R is C 1 -C 3 alkyl, said antimony compound being an antimony compound soluble in the polyester, or if in excess of its solubility, then in a finely divided state. Specified antimony compounds are antimony trioxide, antimonic acid, antimony glycoloxide, antimony acetate and triphenyl antimony. Specified components for the polyesters are terephthalic acid, naphthalene - 2 : 6 - dicarboxylic acid and 1: 2 - diphenoxyethane - p,p<SP>1</SP> - dicarboxylic acid and glycols of the formula HO(CH 2 ) n OH wherein n is from 2 to 10, and bis-(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexane. The polyesters include copolyesters with other acids. Examples are given for the preparation of the polyester mixtures. |
