titleOfInvention Heat-resistant resins
abstract 1280846 Polyimides RHONE-POULENC SA 18 Dec 1969 [19 Dec 1968] 61838/69 Addition to 1190718 Heading C3R The process of parent Specification for preparing resins by reacting an unsaturated bisimide with a diamine is effected in the presence of 0À5 to 5% (by weight of the bis-imide) of a mono- or polyacid of which at least one group has a pK a less than 4À5 and/or of 0À01 to 2% of an inhibitor of free radicals. A radical polymerization initiator may be used in conjunction with the acid. Specified acids are HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , H 3 PO 4 , organic sulphonic and phosphonic acids; maleic, fumaric and mono- and di-chloro acetic acids and bis maleamic acids of bis-(paminophenyl)methane, m-diamino-benzene and hexamethylene diamine. Specified radical inhibitors are hydroquinone, picric acid and N,N- diphenyl-N<SP>1</SP>-picrylhydrazine. The initiator may be lauroyl peroxide, azobisisobutyronitrile or diazabicyclooctane. The resins may be used as adhesives for laminates e.g. as in Example 4 of the parent Specification, especially when the inhibitor is used. Other applications are as in the parent Specification particular reference being made to use of the resin prepared with acid for moulding application. The present modification is of particular value when the resins are prepared in two stages; the inhibitor improves the stability of the prepolymer.
