titleOfInvention Preparation of ethyleneoxide alcohol adducts
abstract 1280563 Ethylene oxide adducts of alcohols CONTINENTAL OIL CO 18 June 1970 [18 June 1969] 29663/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] An ethylene oxide alcohol adduct having reduced wetting time characteristics is prepared by reacting ethylene oxide with a C 8-18 saturated aliphatic monohydric primary alcohol in the presence of 0À1 to 0À5 weight per cent of water based on the quantity of alcohol used. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a conventional acid catalyst to give a product containing 3À9 to 9À7 moles of ethylene oxide, and this product may be further ethoxylated in the presence of a conventional basic catalyst to give a product containing 57 to 61 weight per cent of ethylene oxide. An example describes the two-stage ethoxylation of a mixture of C 10-14 alcohols. Uses.-As surfactants for treating textiles.
