titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to pneumo-mechanical digital data-storage devices
abstract 1280177 Pneumo-mechanical digital datastorage devices FILMFABRIK WOLFEN VEB 9 Sept 1969 44542/69 Heading G4B A pneumo-mechanical digital data-storage device comprises a drum 11, Figs. 3, 4, having a peripheral wall 12 and equiangularly spaced storage cells in the wall, each cell comprising chambers 8, 9 interconnected by a bore 10 and housing a storage element 7, e.g. a ball or pin, movable from chamber 8 to chamber 9 by a pneumatic input device 3, Fig. 3, and conversely by a pneumatic erasure device (5), Fig. 5 (not shown), and radially disposed bores 6 which co-operate with a pneumatic interrogation device 4, 4a, Fig. 4, adjustably positioned adjacent wall 12. Each element 7 is confined within its associated cell by bushes 20 and the drum is driven stepwise by an actuator 13, Fig. 6, preferably pneumatic and of limited stroke, via toothed discs 18, 19 and associated pawls 16, 17 respectively. Pawl 16 is pivoted to a spring loaded transmission lever 15 and performs the stepping motion and pawl 17, fixed to lever 15, acts as a locking device. Preferably the erasure device is situated at least two storage cells away from the input device in the direction of rotation of the drum, and the drum may be associated with a plurality of interrogation devices.
