titleOfInvention | Improvements in soluble ladder spiro polymer |
abstract | 1279651 Cyclized polyallene UNIROYAL Inc 22 Aug 1969 [29 Aug 1968] 41993/69 Heading C3P Cyclized 1,2-polyallene as a soluble ladder spiropolymer containing substantially no methylene unsaturation may be prepared by treating a soluble 1,2-polyallene containing a substantial proportion of methylene unsaturation with a Lewis acid, preferably in solution in a hydrocarbon, nitrohydrocarbon or ether solvent. The Lewis acid may be boron trifluoride, stannic chloride, titanium tetrachloride, aluminium chloride, aluminium bromide or aluminium iodide. The polyallene may be prepared by polymerizing allene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a transition metal halide and an aluminium alkyl, or a nickel or rhodium based catalyst, particularly a catalyst of formula (RhXY m ) n where X is halogen, Y is a cyclic or non-cyclic mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-unsaturated hydrocarbon of 2 to 20 carbon atoms, m is 1 or 2 when n is 1 and m is 0À5, 1, 1À5 or 2 when n is 2 or 3, which may be used in conjunction with an ethylenically unsaturated compound. In examples allene is polymerized in the presence of (1 and 5) bis-(cyclo-octa-1,5- diene) dirhodium dichloride, (2) tris-(butadiene)- dirhodium dichloride, (3) bis-(cyclo-octa-1,5- diene) dirhodium dichloride and butadiene and (4) vanadyl trichloride and aluminium triisobutyl, and the products are cyclized in the presence of (1, 2, 4 and 5) boron trifluoride etherate and (3) titanium tetrachloride. |
