titleOfInvention Polyester-based coating compositions
abstract 1279000 Polyester coating compositions CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 24 Oct 1969 [25 Oct 1968 (2)] 52139/69 Heading C3R A coating composition contains as a binder a mixture containing (A) 10-50% of condensates oligomers or polymers containing N-methylol and/or N-methylol ether groups and (B) 50- 90% of linear polyesters containing free OH groups and free carboxyl and/or alkoxycarbonyl groups having a m.wt. of 800-5000, obtained by esterifying a hydroxy component (a) comprising 1-50 mol. per cent of C 3-6 aliphatic polyols containing 3 or 4 OH groups and 50-99 mol. per cent of a diol reactant which is constituted by 30-100 mol. per cent of 1,4-bis- (hydroxymethyl)-cyclohexane with optionally up to 70 mol. per cent of other aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diols, in which the hydroxyl groups are separated by 2-8 carbon atoms of which up to 2 may be replaced by oxygen atoms (there being at least 2 carbon atoms between any two oxygen atoms), with an acid component (b) comprising 33-91 mol. per cent of one or more aromatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids or their esters or anhydrides and 9-67 mol. per cent of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids containing 4-12 carbon atoms or their acids or anhydrides. The methylol derivatives comprising (A) are suitably reaction products of formaldehyde with such substances as melamine, urea, N,N<SP>1</SP>-ethylene urea, dicyandiamide and benzoguanamine. Coating compositions are made by dissolving the aminoplast (A) (or its precursor) and the polyester B in a conventional solvent for lacquers. Pigments, extenders and cross-linking accelera. tors such as p-toluenesulphonic acid may also be added. In a typical process for the production of a lacquer a polyester made by reacting a hydroxy component containing 1,4-bis- (hydroxymethyl)-cyclohexane and glycerol (and optionally also ethylene glycol) with a mixture of adipic acid and phthalic anhydride is dissolved in xylene or a xylene/butanol/2-ethoxyethyl acetate mixture, the resulting solution is added to a solution of a melamine-formaldehyde condensate in xylene/butanol, and titanium dioxide and p-toluenesulphonic acid are added. The acid number of the polyester may be raised if desired by heating with maleic anhydride.
