titleOfInvention | Silanes as adhesive primers for poly-p-xylylenes |
abstract | 1278663 Coated products UNION CARBIDE CORP 5 Sept 1969 [6 Sept 1968] 44058/69 Heading B2E A substrate is coated with poly-p-xylylene by (i) providing on the surface a siloxane or polysiloxane having an ethylenically unsaturated group bonded directly to the silicon atoms and (ii) contacting with vapourous p-xylylene diradicals. The siloxane or polysiloxane may be formed by hydrolysis and condensation of a substituted silane or siloxane having bonded to the silicon atoms (a) an ethylenically unsaturated group, and (b) a hydrolysable group; exemplified compounds are vinyltrichlorosilane, vinylmethyldichlorosilane, and γ-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane. Hydrolysis may be assisted by reactive groups on the substrate. The substrate may be dipped in a solution of the silicon compound and dried. The p-xylylene radicals can be prepared by cleavage of the dimeric compound. where R is an optional nuclear substituent and x is y are 0, 1, 2 or 3, at up to 700‹C and are contacted with the substrate in a vacuum chamber. Homopolymers or copolymers may be formed, depending on the choice of dimeric compound and control of the deposition temperature. In examples, p-xylylene and chloro-p-xylylene radicals are used. The substrate may be sheets, fibrous, or particulate, a list of suitable materials being given: in examples glass, aluminium, copper and epoxyresin-glass fibre laminate are used. |
