titleOfInvention | A process for purifying microorganisms grown on hydrocarbon substrates |
abstract | 1278019 Yeast &c INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLES DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 16 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 44281/70 Heading C6F Micro-organisms from a hydrocarbon fermentation contaminated with hydrocarbon are contacted simultaneously with a surfactant and with a hydrocarbon solvent selected from (i) aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons of boiling points between 30 and 200‹C, at standard pressure and (ii) straight-chain aliphatic C 9 -C 25 hydrocarbons, and the resulting purified microorganisms are separated from the surfactant and from the hydrocarbon solvent. Surfactants: non-ionic condensates of ethylene oxide (or propylene oxide) groups with lauryl alcohol, stearic acid, nonyl phenol, resin, dodecyl mercaptan, octylamine, lauryl mono-ethanolamide and tallow sugar glyceride. Solvents: (i) pentane, hexane, heptane, iso-octane, nonane, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, benzene and (ii) nonane, n-decane, n-dodecane and n-hexadecane. The micro-organism is dispersed in an aqueous phase at a concentration of 5 to 150g (dry weight) per litre of aqueous phase before being contacted with the surfactant and hydrocarbon solvent. Residual hydrocarbon solvent may be taken up from the purified micro-organisms in a stream of inert gas or super-heated steam or by boiling. When the straight-chain aliphatic Ca-C 25 hydrocarbons are used as solvent, traces of these and of residual hydrocarbons from the fermentation can be at least partly eliminated from the micro-organisms by further fermentation in an aqueous medium without added hydrocarbon. Hydrocarbon solvent separated from the treated micro-organisms can be passed to the hydrocarbon fermentation. Examples are directed to the treatment of cells of Candida lipolytica after cultivation upon hydrocarbons, with hexane containing one of the abovementioned surfactants. |
