titleOfInvention | A continuous furnace for sintering |
abstract | 1276229 Continuous sintering furnaces COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 17 July 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 34815/70 Heading F4B A continuous furnace for sintering pellets of uranium oxide and/or plutonium oxide comprises sections 10, 12, 14, 20, 22 and 24 forming a tubular enclosure 32 for a support plate 8 carrying molybdenum boats 6, said enclosure being flanked by charging and discharging air locks B and C, inlet pipes 34, 36 and 38 for a reducing or neutral gas, offtakes 16 in furnace section 14 leading to condensers 18, pusher apparatus 48 for feeding boats 6 through the furnace and rams 44 and 54 for charging and discharging the boats. The atmosphere gas may be hydrogen, argon or a mixture of hydrogen and argon or hydrogen and helium. The air locks B and C are delimited by doors 40, 42 and 56, 58, door 42 being removable by charging ram 44 and door 58 by a discharging ram 60. Said air locks are associated with a charging vestibule 11 and a discharging vestibule 26. Each of the aforementioned furnace sections comprises a mild steel casing with refractory lining, flanged joints sealed by 0-rings and is fitted with rollers resting on a fixed bed for ease of movement. Preheating section 12 and heating sections 20, 22 have solenoid wound resistance heating elements 30 suspended from ceramic strips 31. The last section 24 is associated with a water cooling jacket 25 by which boats 6 are cooled to handling temperature before entering vestibule 26. Operation.-Door 42 being removed by ram 44, a tray 46 of six boats is inserted into air lock B. Door 42 is then returned, air lock B purged with nitrogen, door 40 opened and the boats pushed forward by ram 44. As each boat abuts contact 62, ram 44 is stopped and ram 48 pushes said boat into the furnace. When all the boats are in vestibule 11, door 40 is closed. Binding agents from the pellets are swept by the atmosphere gas into the condensers 18. Discharge ram 54 pushes six boats in turn from vestibule 26 into air lock C, door 56 then being closed and the air lock purged. Finally, ram 60 removes door 58 and a tray carrying the six boats. |
