titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to the Sulphonation of Benzene.
abstract 127,614. Barbet et Fils et Cie., E. May 1, 1916, [Convention date]. Mineral oils, purifying. - Borneo ur Malaya petroleum fractions containing benzene are treated in vapour form with hot fuming sulphuric acid in a continuous manner, and the resulting benzene sulphonic acid and unattacked petroleums are separated. Using the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the vaporized hydrocarbons from a heater C are supplied to the bottom of a plate-column A, while fuming sulphuric acid is supplied to the top of the column from a heater D; the sulphonic acid formed flows off by pipe b to a heat-exchanger B in which it heats the entering hydrocarbons and then flows to a tank G; the petroleum vapours pass off to a condenser E, the condensate is washed with water in a purifier H and is collected in a tank K. The plate-column A contains, in addition to the usual plates M, Fig. 2, fitted with bubbling-hoods S, S', a number of plates M<1> provided with heating-coils T to maintain the temperature of the liquid on the plates; heating-coils may also be provided in the bubbling-plates if desired.
