titleOfInvention | Vapour phase oxidation of hydroxy compounds |
abstract | 1,273,517. Oxidation catalysts. LAPORTE CHEMICALS Ltd. 6 Aug., 1969 [6 May, 1968], No. 7660/71. Divided out of 1,272,592. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] An oxidation catalyst for use in the preparation of a carbonyl compound by oxidation of the corresponding hydroxy compound comprises copper and at least one element selected from tin, lead, arsenic, antimony and bismuth, at least part of the catalyst optionally being present in oxide form. The catalyst may comprise gauze or turnings of an alloy which may have been subjected to oxidation with molecular oxygen, for example at a temperature of from 400 to 550‹C, or nitric acid. A preferred catalyst comprises up to 40 weight per cent tin, at least part of which may be present in oxide form, and copper as balance. The catalyst may be supported on alumina or pumice. According to Example 1, catalyst is prepared by subjecting turnings of copper-tin alloy to an oxidative treatment thereby to provide a surface layer containing tin oxide; according to Example 2, catalyst is prepared by mixing copper powder having a particle size not greater than 0.075 mm and tin oxide with a slurry, in acetone, of pumice having a particle size greater than 0.75 mm but not greater than 2 mm, the resulting mixture being heated to remove acetone. Other exemplified catalysts include copper alloyed with arsenic or antimony or bismuth. |
