titleOfInvention Preparation of hydroxy monocarboxylic acids
abstract 1,273,475. Cobalt-containing catalysts. TEIJIN Ltd. 20 March, 1970 [20 March, 1969], No. 13536/70. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] A cobalt-containing hydrogenation catalyst is prepared by sintering, at a temperature of from 1000 to 1750‹C in a gas containing molecular oxygen, for example air, cobalt oxide or a compound yielding cobalt oxide during such sintering, for example cobalt hydroxide, cobalt carbonate or cobalt nitrate, and thereafter reducing the sintered product in hydrogen, for example at a temperature of from 280 to 550‹C and preferably until evolution of water ceases. Prior to sintering, the cobalt oxide or precursor therefor may be moulded; prior to reducing, the sintered product may be ground to particles having a diameter of 2-3 mm. The catalyst may contain additional metal or metals, for example selected from aluminium, copper, chromium and manganese, in an amount constituting not more than 20 weight per cent of the total weight of cobalt (as metal) and additional metal or metals. The catalyst may comprise inert carrier material, for example alumina, silica, diatomaceous earth or pumice; such supported catalyst may be prepared either by moulding a mixture of powdered cobalt oxide and powdered alumina and thereafter sintering and reducing the moulded product or by immersing carrier material in an aqueous solution of a watersoluble cobalt compound, for example cobalt nitrate, and thereafter drying, sintering and reducing the impregnated carrier material. Examples relate to catalyst prepared from cobalt oxide; metallic cobalt and cobalt hydroxide; cobalt oxide and alumina (Al constituting 20 weight per cent of Co+Al); cobalt oxide and copper oxide (Cu constituting 10 weight per cent of Co+Cu); and cobalt oxide, copper oxide and manganese oxide (Cu and Mn each constituting 5 weight per cent of Co+Cu+ Mn). The cobalt oxide is believed to be present in the catalyst as Co 2 O 4 .
