titleOfInvention Production of ethylene glycol esters and compounds derived thereform
abstract 1,272,820. Ethylene glycol esters. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 24 Sept., 1969 [26 Sept., 1968; 24 March, 1969], No. 47068/69. Heading C2C. Ethylene glycol esters of carboxylic acids are prepared by contacting ethylene with a carboxylic acid and oxygen at an elevated temperature in the presence of (a) one or more halogens selected from bromine, chlorine, and bromine or chlorine containing compounds and (b) one or more variable valence metal cations selected from Te, Ce, Sb, Mn, V, Ga, As, Co, Cu, Se, Cr and Ag. The halogen may be as such or as the acid, or as alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts. The diacetate may be cracked by pyrolysis to yield vinyl acetate or hydrolysed to form monoacetate and/or ethylene glycol. Many acids which may be used are listed and the variable metal cation may be introduced by the addition of finely divided metal, metal carbonate, oxide, hydroxide, bromide, chloride, alkoxide, phenoxide or carboxylate. An inert solvent may be added or the carboxylic acid reactant may be used. Examples describe the reaction of ethylene with acetic, caproic, palmitic, succinic, chloropropionic, cyanoacetic, methoxyacetic, 3-methylthiopropionic, benzoic, p-toluic, 2-naphthoic, m-chlorobenzoic, o-nitrobenzoic, salicylic, p-hydroxybenzoic, m-aminobenzoic, phenylacetic, 2-phenylbutyric, 1-naphthaleneacetic, hexahydrobenzoic, picolinic, nicotinic, 3-indoleacetic, furoic, 2-thiophenacarboxylic and quinolinic acids with varying combinations of metal and halogen. Vinyl acetate, ethylene glycol and monoacetate are also prepared from the ethylene glycol diacetate.
