abstract | 1,270,838. Fire fighting foams. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 March, 1970 [28 April, 1969], No. 21584/69. Heading ASA. [Also in Division C2] Fire-fighting foams contain as foaming agents compounds of the formula: where Y is a partially substituted aromatic nucleus having at least one substituent which is a fully fluorinated alkyl group containing 2-20 carbon atoms and X is a hydrophilic group attached to the SO 2 group by an oxygen or nitrogen atom of the hydrophilic group. Other foaming agents and/or surfactants may be present, e.g. oligomers of tetrafluoroethylene as described in Specification 1,270,661, proteins, celluloses, soaps, or sulphate or sulphonate surfactants, and also foam-improvers e.g. cellulose derivatives, hydrolysed proteins, glues, or polyalkylene compounds. To generate the foam the aqueous solution may be blown with N 2 or a fluorocarbon, or merely whisked. The compositions and foams therefrom are compatible with dry. powder extinguishants, including NaHCO 3 , KHCO 3 , KCl, K 2 SO 4 , ammonium phosphate or those described in Specification 1,168,092. Examples 8-12 disclose fire-fighting foams of the invention under test. |
