A 2-aminopyridine of the formula in which each R 1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical, or two of the substituents R 1 on adjacent carbon atoms form a divalent saturated or unsaturated radical thus forming a ring with the two carbon atoms of the pyridine ring to which they are attached, and R is the same as R 1 or is a monovalent heterocyclic radical, is prepared by reacting a 2- hydroxypyridine of the formula with ammonia or an amine of the formula NH 2 R at a temperature of from 200 to 500 C. Examples describe the preparation of 2-aminopyridine, 2 - amino - 6 - methylpyridine, 2- (phenylamino) pyridine and dipyridylamine. |
