titleOfInvention | Selective reactions of free radicals with unsaturated compounds |
abstract | 1,269,119. Free radical reactions. MOBIL OIL CORP. 7 July, 1969 [27 Aug., 1968], No. 34117/69. Heading C2C. Compounds containing C-C multiple bonds are reacted in presence of a reducible metal ion M with a free radical source, being a compound, resistant to oxidation by M, containing a >CHCOC<, >CHCHO, >CHCO 2 C#, >CHCN, >CHNO 2 , >CHS(#o)C#, >CHS(#o) 2 SC#, >CHSO 3 H, >CHSO 2 H or HSC# group, where M is Mn, Ce, Fe, Ni, Co, Hg, Pd, Ag, Cu, Ti, Tl, Th, V or Sn. In specified reactions using Mn(oAc) 3 , the free radical substitutes at 1 C atom of an ethylenic bond and the OAc radical may additionally add to the other C atom of that bond, forming a saturated ester, but the sulphinic and sulphonic acids give 1,2-oxathiolan-2-oxides and 2,2-dioxides, respectively. Styrene reacts with aldehydes or ketones giving 2 - phenyl - 2,3 - dihydrofurans, possibly 5-substituted. |
