A process for the manufacture of p-toluenesulphochloride comprises reacting toluene with chlorosulphonic acid in the presence of a salt, wherein for each mol of toluene, within the range of 1-2 mols of chlorosulphonic acid and within the range of 0.1-1 mol of an alkali metal-, alkaline-earth metal- or ammonium salt are placed in a reaction vessel, toluene is added thereto and after reacting at 60-90‹ C. the mixture is cooled to 30-40‹ C. and a further amount of at least 1 mol per each mol of toluene of chlorosulphonic acid is added and the mixture is further reacted to form p-toluenesulphochloride. |
