titleOfInvention New phosphorus-containing polyamides
abstract 1,268,829. Phosphorous-containing polyamides. RHONE-POULENC S.A. 17 Sept., 1969 [18 Sept., 1968], No. 45930/69. Heading C3R. ' Polyamides comprise a plurality of units wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 independently represent divalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or alkylaromatic radicals, A is Cl, OH, C 1-4 , alkoxy or -NR<SP>1</SP>.R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>ll</SP> are independently H or C 1-10 alkyl. They may be prepared from an appropriate dicarboxylic compound and phosphorus containing diamine and may also contain units resulting from replacement of up to 50 mole per cent of the dicarboxylic component by a higher polycarboxylic component, e.g. trimesic acid, and up to 90 mol. per cent of the diamine by another diamine, e.g. one which does not contain phosphorus or of the same formula except that A is alkyl or phenyl. Polymers wherein A is alkoxy or Cl may be obtained by treating the corresponding polymer where A is OH with an esterifying or chlorinating agent, e.g. thionyl chloride, and those wherein A is NR<SP>1</SP>.R<SP>11</SP> by treating that where A is Cl with an amine HNR<SP>1</SP>.R<SP>11</SP>. Various reactants and solvents for the reaction are specified. The polymers are fire-resistant and soluble in polar organic solvents, e.g. dimethyl acetamide, N- methylpyrrolidone, hexamethyl phosphotriamide or dimethyl sulphoxide; aqueous solutions of inorganic or tertiary organic bases, e.g. NaOH, KOH, Na 2 CO 3 or NH 4 OH. They may be formed into filaments, films, sheets or moulded articles.
