abstract | 1,265,070. Polymerizing α-olefins. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 11 June, 1969 [27 June, 1968 (4); 13 March, 1969], No. 29553/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C2] Ethylene, or a mixture of ethylene and up to 10% by weight of one or more α-olefins of the formula R-CH=CH 2 wherein R is C 1-13 hydrocarbon, is polymerized at 20-120‹ C. and up to 20 atmospheres, in solution, suspension or in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) the reaction product of a tetravalent titanium compound containing halogen and alkoxy or aralkoxy groups and a solid halogen-free magnesium compound containing 0À1-2 hydroxy groups per genatom of magnesium, and (B) an organoaluminium compound. The magnesium compound may be the hydroxide, carbonate, sulphate or a carboxylate and it may be reacted with an inorganic metal compound which will not inhibit polymerization, e.g. an oxide, hydroxide, halide, sulphate carbonate, phosphate or silicate and preferably zinc chloride before reaction with the tetravalent titanium compound, which may have the general formula TiX n (OR) 4-n wherein R is C 1-18 hydrocarbon, X is chlorine or bromine and n is 1-3 e.g. diethoxytitanium dichloride, triethoxytitanium chloride, di-isopropoxytitanium dichloride; triisopropoxytitanium chloride. The organoaluminium compound (B) is preferably trialkylaluminium, dialkylaluminium hydride, dialkylaluminium chloride, alkyl aluminium sesquichloride or the reaction product of trialkylaluminium or dialkylaluminium hydride with a C 4-20 diolefin. The component (A) may be treated with the organoaluminium compound (B) prior to polymerization at - 30‹ to 100‹ C., in order to reduce the tetravalent titanium compound to a lower valency. |
