abstract | 1,264,518. Alkanolamines from nitro alkanols. COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORP. 22 Oct., 1969 [23 Oct., 1968], No. 51779/69. Heading C2C. Alkanolamines are prepared by the catalytic reduction of the corresponding nitroalkanols by continuously passing a solution of a nitroalkanol, e.g. in methanol, into a reaction zone at a feed rate sufficient to provide a residence time of from 2-8 hours, under pressure and at a temperature of from 46-70‹ C., maintaining the solution in a state of agitation in the presence of hydrogen and a finely divided nickel catalyst, and continuously withdrawing the alkanolamine produced through an internallymounted filter, which retains the catalyst within the reaction zone. The filter may be of sintered steel or nickel or porous ceramic, and preferably has a filtration rating of 5 Á, and a surface area/ feed rate ratio of from 0À5-2À5 sq. ins./gallon/ hr. of feed. Specified nitro-alkanols include 2- nitro - 2 - methyl - 1 - propanol, 2 - nitro - 1- butanol, 2 - nitro - 1 pentanol, 2 - nitro-1- hexanol, 3 - nitro - 4 - heptanol, 5 - nitro-4- octanol, 2 - nitro - 2 - methyl - 1,3 - propane diol, 2 - nitro - 2 - ethyl - 1,3 - propane diol, 2 - nitro - 2 - isopropyl - 1,3 - propane diol, tris - (hydroxymethyl) - nitromethane and 2,5- dinitro - 2,5 - bis - (hydroxymethyl) - 3,4 - diphenyl-1,6-hexane diol. |
