titleOfInvention | Process for the continuous chlorination or chlorosulphonation of unsubstituted or substituted polyolefins |
abstract | 1,263,327. Chlorinating polymers. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 8 Dec., 1969 [7 Dec., 1968], No. 59711/69. Heading C3P. A continuous process for the chlorination or sulphochlorination of polyolefins or substituted polyolefins with a reaction gas comprising chlorine or a mixture thereof with sulphur dioxide in the presence of an organic solvent of specific gravity at least equal to that of the polymer and in which the polymer is soluble only when chlorinated or chlorosulphonated, comprises feeding particulate polymer to an upper part of a column of the solvent, contacting the polyolefin with the reaction gas and discharging the chlorinated or chlorosulphonated polymer sinking into the lower part of the column as a solution of density greater than that of the solvent. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, copolymers of ethylene with propylene and/or butylene, polyvinyl chloride and polyvinylidene chloride. Specified solvents are chlorobenzene, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene,' chloroform, monofluorotrichloromethane, 1,2,2 - trifluorotrichloroethane and carbon tetrachloride. The process may be effected in the presence of high energy radiation or peroxide or azo catalysts. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described and illustrated and examples describe the chlorination of (1 and 2) polypropylene and (3) polyethylene, and the chlorosulphonation of (4) polyethylene in carbon tetrachloride. |
