titleOfInvention Smoking compositions
abstract 1,262,916. Tobacco substitute. BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. 21 Aug., 1970 [19 Sept., 1969], No. 46423/69. Heading A2C. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] A non-tobacco smoking composition usable as a replacement for or in a mixture with tobacco, comprises a smoulderable mixture or combination of at least two polymer materials neither of which will smoulder alone, for example the polymers may have different combustion characteristics in that one tends to char or fuse and the other to flare. Non-polymeric additives, such as carbon, metal particles, or simple inorganic salts such as carbonates, oxides or nitrates, may be included to modify the rate of smouldering. The composition is formed into a sheet or film which is shredded to form a cigarette filler material. Suitable compositions include a dried mixture of aqueous solutions of two water-soluble polymers such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyethylene oxide, a dried mixture of a dispersion of carbon particles in a sodium CMC solution and a polyvinyl alcohol solution, an insoluble polymer such as CMC free acid, algmic acid or pectinic acid dispersed as a powder in a film of polyethylene oxide, or a dual sheet comprising for example a polyethylene oxide film containing carbon powder and coated with sodium CMC. Further exemplified compositions are produced from mixtures of: sodium CMC, a polyvinyl alcohol and an aqueous tobacco extract; sodium CMC, a polyethylene oxide and CaCO 3 ; and methyl cellulose plus polyethylene oxide with MgCO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 , Na 2 SO 4 , NaNO 3 or ZnO.
