Heading C2C. #-Aminocarboxylic acids are produced by reacting an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid nitrile with formic acid at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure followed by treatment of the resultant polyamide with an aqueous mineral acid or caustic alkali solution. Starting materials mentioned include acrylonitrile and substitution derivatives thereof bearing C 1-6 alkyl radicals or cyclohexyl benzyl or phenyl radicals in the α- or #-positions. The examples describe the preparation of #-alanine and α-methyl #-alanine hydrochloride.
