titleOfInvention Hovercraft skirts
abstract 1,261,014. Coated fabric. DEERING MILIKEN Ltd. 7 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 53620/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions B5, B7 and D1] A hovercraft skirt is made from an elasto- .mer coated, non-square woven fabric of multiply cords, in which the area of void space in the uncoated fabric is at least 5% of the total area, of the uncoated fabric and the twist factor (defined) for the yarns of the cords is from 1.0 to 9.7 and that for the the cords is from 1.4 to 16.8. Preferably the yarn twist factor is 1.6 to 6.3 and that for the cords 2.2 to 10.9. The cords which may be of two or three plies are preferably made of continuous filament organic synthetic fibres, e.g. nylon, with the filaments of the individual yarns lying substantially along the axial direction of the cords. The elastomer coating is natural or Neoprane rubber and is bound to the fabric by an adhesive comprising an adhesive resin and an elastomer. The elastomer may be the same as that of the coating or polyvinyl chloride. The adhesive resin may be a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin and the adhesive may also contain a styrene-butadiene latex or a vinylpyridine-styrene-butadiene terpolymer. The cords of the fabric may be preshrunk by heating and may be coated with the adhesive prior to weaving. The skirt may be made by applying a dip of adhesive composition to the fabric on a padding mangle, drying the so-treated fabric, spread-coating elastomer onto the dried fabric and cutting and shaping the elastomer coated fabric to form a hovercraft skirt.
