titleOfInvention Macroporous crosslinked copolymers
abstract 1,260,431. Macroporous cross-linked copolymers. SYBRON CORP. 28 July, 1969 [5 Aug., 1968], No. 37824/69. Headings C3C and C3P. Macroporous cross-linked copolymers suitable for conversion to ion exchange resins are prepared by (a) forming a liquid monomer phase comprising (1) a mixture of copolymerizable monoolefinic and polyolefinic monomers, (2) an inert, monomer-soluble, copolymer insoluble, micelle-forming solubilizer in an amount equal to at least the critical micelle forming concentration of the solubilizer in the monomer, and (3) a monomer-insoluble, copolymer-insoluble precipitant in the liquid state selected from water, acetamide, succinonitrile, methyl sulphate and glycols, in an amount so as to be solubilized by the solubilizer in the monomer mixture at the polymerization temperature; (b) forming an aqueous phase comprising (1) a major proportion of water, (2) a minor proportion of a water-soluble colloid, and (3) a buffer system to maintain the pH at 9 to 12; (c) dispersing the monomer phase in the aqueous phase and adding thereto a free radical polymerization initiator; and (d) heating the suspension to a polymerization temperature of 65‹ to 90‹ C. while stirring; or alternatively by bulk polymerizing mixture (a) in the presence of an initiator. The products may be sulphonated or chloromethylated and aminated. Many suitable materials are listed and examples describe the copolymerization of styrene/ethyl vinyl benzene/divinyl benzene and styrene/ ethylene glycol dimethacrylate using sodium di(2-ethylhexyl)sulphosuccinate as solubilizer, water, ethylene glycol or acetamide as precipitant, gelatine, gum arabic or hydroxymethyl cellulose as colloids, sodium phosphate or sodium hydroxide/boric acid buffers, benzoyl peroxide as initiator, and sodium chloride; and the sulphonation or chloromethylation and amination with trimethylamine or diethylene triamine of the resulting copolymers.
