Novel compounds of Formula I (in which n is 0 or 1 and Z is phenyl, substituted phenyl, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 haloalkyl or -NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>, where R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1-4 alkyl and R<SP>2</SP> is C 1-4 hydroxyalkyl or cyclohexyl, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, together with the adjacent nitrogen atom, form aheterocyclic ring optionally substituted by one or more C 1-4 alkyl groups) and acid addition salts thereof, are prepared (a) by reacting a compound of Formula II with a compound of formula X.CH 2 .CO.Z (in which X is halogen) or (b) (when n is 1) by reacting 5-nitrothiophene-2-aldehyde a compound of Formula III and optionally converting a resultant compound to an acid addition salt. Compounds I in which Z is -NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP> can also be prepared by reacting compounds I in which Z is haloalkyl with an amine HNR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>. Pharmaceutical compositions having antiparasitic activity comprise a compound of the invention together with a pharmaceutical carrier.
