The invention comprises compound of formula wherein R is H or an aliphatic group; R 2 is H, a C 1-5 aliphatic group, aryl (unsubstituted, or at least disubstituted), an araliphatic group, furyl, 3-pyridyl or thienyl; and X 1 , X 2 are each H, halogen (=Y), alkyl, alkoxy, CY 3 or NO 2 but may not be Y, alkyl or CF 3 when R 2 is Ph. These compounds are prepared by reacting the corresponding o-aminodiphenylamine with (R 2 )- CO 2 H or a functional equivalent thereof.
