abstract 1,259,551. Detergent composition. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. 8 May, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 23435/69. Heading C5D. A detergent composition comprises: (A) a detergent substance selected from anionic, non- ionic, ampholytic and zwitterionic synthetic detergents and mixtures thereof; (B) a detergent builder comprising nitrilotriacetic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof in admixture with an inorganic water-soluble alkaline phosphate builder salt; and (C) a soil anti-redeposition composition comprising an ionic, water-soluble cellulose ether or salt thereof in admixture with a gelatine protein selected from animal glue, gelatine and mixtures thereof. Examples employ as the detergent substance sodium linear alkyl (C 12 ) sulphonate but many other conventional anionic, nonionic, ampholytic or zwitterionic detergents may be used. Component (B) is preferably an admixture of sodium tripolyphosphate(STP) and sodium nitrilotriacetate (SNTA) in which the molar ratio of STP to SNTA is 4 : 1 to 1 : 4. Other suitable phosphate builders specified are sodium pyrophosphate and sodium phosphate. The ionic, water-soluble cellulose ether may be carboxymethyl-cellulose, as either the sodium or potassium salt, or sodium carboxymethyl hydroxyethylcellulose. The weight ratio of cellulose ether to animal glue or gelatine may be within the range 5 : 95 to 95 : 5, and the soil anti-redeposition agent is preferably used in an amount of 0À25-3À00% by weight of the total composition. The remainder of the detergent mixture is preferably comprised of 5-30% by weight detergent and 15-55% by weight builder. The detergent composition is preferably compounded so as to provide an aqueous solution, in use, having a pH from 7 to 12 and this is achieved by adding 3-15% by weight sodium silicate. A further additive is filler material, e.g. sodium sulphate, which may be present in an amount up to 50% by weight. The detergent composition may be made into any commercially accepted form, e.g. granular, flake, liquid or tablet.
