abstract 1,259,096. Determination of fat-soluble substances in blood. LILLY INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 Feb., 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 28284/71. Divided out of 1,259,095. Heading B1X. [Also in Division A5] Apparatus for use in determining the identity and/or concentration of fat-soluble substances in the blood stream of an animal comprises a member adapted for insertion into, and subsequent removal from, the blood stream of an animal, the member comprising an absorbent material which is capable of absorbing fatsoluble substances from the blood of the animal and which is protected by a membrane permeable to the fat-soluble substances but impermeable to the highly polar molecules normally present in the blood stream. The absorbent material may be either a chemical absorbent, for example an acid or a base, or a physical absorbent, for example charcoal or alumina; as exemplified, the absorbent material is in the form of particles of charcoal, each particle being covered by a membrane which is in the form of a thin film or coating of a polyethylene-dodecane mixture. Figures 1 and 2 illustrate an embodiment of such apparatus in the form of a conventional hypodermic syringe the barrel 1 of which contains a rubber piston 2 to the end wall of which is bonded a plurality of wires 3 which extend through the nozzle 4 of the syringe into a hollow open-ended needle 5 connected to the nozzle by a tubular connector 6. Axially disposed within the needle is a shaft 7 which is secured in position within and to the needle by axially-extending plates (not shown) welded to the walls of the needle and which extends beyond the open end of the needle to terminate in a pointed head 9. The end 10 of each wire is coated with charcoal particles which themselves are coated with and held to the wire by a polyethylene-dodecane mixture. The wires, which may be retracted relative to the needle and shaft to the position illustrated in Figure 4 by withdrawal of the plunger 11 of the syringe, may be made of stainless metal or constituted by threads of plastics material and may be eight in number disposed equidistantly around the shaft. The apparatus may be used to obtain from the blood stream of an animal fat-soluble substances the identity and/or concentration of which is determined by a method disclosed and claimed in Specification 1,259,095.
