Compounds of formula where R is H or an electron-attracting group (e.g. acyl, nitro, alkylsulphonyl or cyano), R<SP>1</SP> is H or alkali metal, X is H, halogen, NO 2 , alkyl, optionally substituted phenyl and Y is H, halogen or alkyl, or X and Y may form part of a condensed unsaturated ring system, are prepared by reacting benzoxazinones of formula with a strong base. Examples prepare 2,4- dihydroxyquinoline and its Na salt, 3-acetyl- 2,4 - dihydroxyquinoline, 3 - acetyl - 7 - nitro- 2,4 - dihydroxyquinoline and 6,8 - dichloro- 2,4 - dihydroxy - 3 - acetylquinoline. Starting material benzoxazinones prepared are 2 - acetonyl -, 2 - acetonyl - 7 - nitro - and 6,8 - dichloro - 2 - acetonyl - benzoxazinones - 4 from corresponding anthranilic acids, diketene and acetic acid or anhydride, and 2-cyanomethylbenzoxazinone - 4 from cyanoacetylanthranilic acid and acetic anhydride. |
