abstract 1,258,129. Titanium dioxide pigments. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 2 April, 1969 [5 April, 1968], No. 17194/69. Heading C1N. TiO 2 pigment is coated, by (a) adding an aqueous silicate solution to an acid agitated aqueous slurry of TiO 2 pigment so that 3-10% of silica (calc. as SiO 2 , based on wt. of TiO 2 ) is precipitated, the pH on completion of the addition being not more than 7; and then (b) adding a source of alumina to the agitated slurry maintained at pH 6-8 so that 1-10% of alumina is precipitated (calc. as Al 2 O 3 , based on wt. of TiO 2 ). The TiO 2 pigment may be anatase or nitrile, particle size 0À15-0À3 micron. Silica precipitation may be effected either by neutralizing, by addition of silicate solution, an aqueous TiO 2 slurry initially acidified by an amount of acid in excess of, or stoichiometrically equivalent to the "alkali" content of the silicate, or by simultaneously adding silicate and acid to the slurry at constant pH level, e.g. 1. Specified acids are H 2 SO 4 , HCl, H 3 PO 4 and hydrolysable compounds such as TiOSO 4 and TiCl 4 . Alumina precipitation may be carried out by simultaneously mixing, with the slurry, acid and alkaline solutions, one of which contains an A1 salt. Specified pairs of reagents are NaOH and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , NaAlO 2 and H 2 SO 4 , NaAlO 2 and alum. The process is. applicable to TiO 2 derived from gas phase oxidation or hydrolysis of TiCl 4 , or hydrolysis of a seeded H 2 SO 4 solution of a titaniferous ore. The TiO 2 may have been calcined in the presence of, or treated with other oxides. In one example, the product also contains hydrated TiO 2 , derived from the TiCl 4 used to acidify the initial TiO 2 slurry.
