abstract 1,257,622. Electrolytic apparatus for continuous plating of recording tape. MASTERTAPE (MAGNETIC) Ltd. Feb.28, 1969 [Nov.28, 1967], No.54181/67. Heading C7B. Apparatus for the production of magnetic recording tape by electro-deposition of a ferromagnetic layer on to a continuous web of plastics film having a conductive coating on one side comprises a plurality of alternative conducting rollers 5 and non-conducting rollers 4 about which the web passes; the conductive rollers 5 having a surface configuration such that only part of the web adjacent the roller is in contact therewith, and the non-conductive rollers 4 being of larger diameter than the conductive rollers such that the web passing beneath them may be immersed in the electrolyte. As shown plastics web 2 passes from roll 3, about the rollers 4, 5 where the conductive layer on the lower face of the web is electro-coated, through washing device 6 and drying device 7 to pick-up spool 10. The conductive rollers 5 are serrated parallel to their axes and may be connected to the current source via mercury cups in contact with the roller support bearings. The rollers 4 may be of methyl methacrylate and the rollers 5 of brass coated with nickel. The electrolyte may comprise nickel and cobalt salts, e.g. chlorides, with boric acid as buffer and toluene sulphonamide as brightener. The counterelectrode 12 may be formed by bars having equal surface areas of nickel and cobalt. Each anode may be connected to a separate, independantlycontrollable power supply. Current may be supplied by means of a three-phase rectifier unit in series with a transformer and shunted by a nickel-cadmium battery. The conductive layer on the web may be of vacuum deposited copper or silver.
