abstract | 1,257,513. Graft polymer-epoxy resin coating materials. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 10 June, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 29213/69. Headings C3B and C3G. An air drying coating material comprises: (A) a graft polymer of a hydroxyl-containing epoxy compound having more than one epoxy group per molecule at least 5% of the hydroxyl groups of said compound having been esterified by a light-fast monoisocyanate, grafted with an olefinically unsaturated monomer and (B) an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic amino compound, basic polyamide polyamine or basic imidazoline, which contains at least three hydrogen atoms attached to the nitrogen atoms of the amino groups. The epoxy compound, which is preferably derived from bisphenol A, may be modified by reaction with, e.g., a polyamine, carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, polyalcohol, phenol-, urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin or a diisocyanate, prior to the esterification. Preferred graft monomers are acrylic and methacrylic esters, vinyl esters, styrene, vinyl chloride, 2-chlorobutadiene and 2,3-dichlorobutadiene, optionally in combination with a monomer containing a reactive group such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, the N-methylol methyl ether of methacrylamide, 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, acrylamide, ethyl methacrylate isocyanate, maleic acid anhydride, glycidyl methacrylate or allyl glycidyl ether. The amino compound B is preferably selected from ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, pentaethylene hexamine, 2,4 - diamino - 2 - methylpentane, bis - (paminocyclohexyl) - methane, m - xylylenediamine, N - (2 - aminoethyl) - piperazine, basic polyamidoamines of dimerized linoleic fatty acid and diethylene triamine or triethylene tetramine and basic imidazolines of a mono- or di-carboxylic acid having 10 to 22 carbon atoms and diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine or pentaethylene hexamine. The reaction between the terminal epoxy groups of A and the amino groups of B may be accelerated by addition of a tertiary amine. The coating material may be mixed with an unmodified epoxide resin. Examples are given in which the coating materials are organic solvent solutions containing (a) a bisphenol A/epichlorohydrin resin partially or completely urethanized with methoxymethyl isocyanate and grafted with methyl methacrylate and acrylic acid, diethylene triamine or a polyamidoamine of dimerized linoleic acid with diethylene triamine and triethylene tetramine, and optionally TiO 2 ; (b) a bisphenol A/epichlorohydrin resin completely urethanized with methoxy-methyl isocyanate and grafted with methyl acrylate and acrylic acid, diethylene triamine and TiO 2 ; (c) a urethanized resin as in (b) grafted with methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate and acrylic acid and diethylene triamine or the said polyamidoamine; (d) a urethanized resin as in (b) grafted with styrene, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid and the said polyamidoamine; and (e) a bisphenol A/epichlorohydrin resin completely urethanized with cyclohexyl isocyanate and grafted with methyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and, optionally, ethyl methacrylate isocyanate, and the said polyamidoamine. |
