abstract | 1,257,396. Antibacterial compositions. MERCK & CO. Inc. 29 Dec., 1969 [6 Jan., 1969], No. 63075/69. Headings A5B and A5E. [Also in Division C2] Pharmaceutical preparations especially useful in inhibiting the growth of gram-positive and -negative bacteria contain cis-1,2-epoxy-sulphonamides (I) (including salts thereof), and/or the corresponding sulphonyl halides (i.e. SO 2 halogen in place of SO 2 NR 1 R 2 ), and/or the corresponding sulphonic acids in salt form with organic bases or alkali or alkaline earth metals (including magnesium) as active ingredients; R 1 and R 2 signify H or optionally substituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radicals, or together with the adjacent nitrogen comprise a heterocyclic ring, or they signify, e.g. acyl, amino, amidino or alkylsulphonyl. Administration may be orally or parenterally. (I) and the sulphonyl halides and salts can also be used as an antiseptic for removing undesirable organisms for pharmaceutical, dental and medical equipment, for separating certain micro-organisms from mixtures of micro-organisms, and in inhibiting bacterial growth in industrial paints, e.g. polyvinyl acetate latex paint, and in the white water used in paper mills. |
