abstract 1,257,016. Unsaturated polymers. INTERNATIONAL SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO. Ltd. 21 March, 1969 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 58131/67. Heading C3P. Unsaturated polymers or copolymers are prepared by a process comprising mixing a substantially saturated homopolymer of an α-olefin having at least three carbon atoms or a substantially saturated copolymer containing at least 5% by weight of such an α-olefin with one or more active agents which are N-haloimides or halogenated quinones and a scavenging amount of one or more metal oxides or carbonates and subjecting the mixture to mechanical shear at a temperature from 120‹ to 180‹ C. so as to promote reaction between the ingredients. Suitable monomers from which the polymers and copolymers may be formed are ethylene, propylene, butene and heptene-1. The active agents may be N-bromosuccinimide, chloranil, N-chlorosuccinimide N-bromo- or N-chlorophthalimide and the metal oxide or carbonate may be magnesium oxide, zinc oxide or calcium carbonate. The unsaturated polymer product may be vulcanized with sulphur.
